Inside:
Warm. That’s the feeling you get from the wood and upholstery colours inside the TEC and no doubt it will be, utilising the tried and tested Truma Combi heating system, which pumps warmed air all around the motorhome, including behind the seats in the huge rear ‘U’ shaped lounge. Almost as large as the lounge, however, is the table. This dominates the lounge area, doubling up as the centre base section of the rear bed. No doubt some owners will substitute the table for something less cumbersome. Without the table in situ, the rear lounge is magnificent; loads of space, comfortable seating, plentiful natural and electric light. Storage is also good, particularly the overhead lockers.
Under the rear seat section you will find the leisure battery and charging system, with the fresh water tank under the nearside seat, leaving only the offside underseat area available for storage. Our review model was fitted with two 3 point rear seatbelts on a substantial framework, the first time I have seen this on a rear lounge layout. Riding in this position can feel a little like being at the back of the bus and conversation with cab occupants will be difficult at normal road speeds.
The midships area of the TEC 598 consists of the kitchen and washroom, both well thought out areas, the kitchen offering 3 burner hob, cooker hood with lighting and extractor, plus oven and grill option. The washroom has a pleasant, modern styling with enclosed shower space and solid screen.
If you weren’t too enamoured with the look of the large overcab pod, maybe the inside will persuade you. The bed over the cab is enormous, comfortable and not in the least bit claustrophobic. It also lifts up to facilitate easier access through the cab area.
Summary:
The FreeTEC 598 may not be the best looking motorhome on the market, but the specification and build quality looks good, it has some very practical features and a pleasing interior.
Although the layout doesn’t lend itself to a garage, the external and internal storage is generous for the relatively compact size. Some people will be attracted to the twin rear wheel drive Ford chassis with cruise control as standard, and taking the optional Flex pack will get you electric windows, cab blinds and cab air-conditioning. The (literally) largest detractor is the huge rear table, a bulky irritation.
