For as long as he can remember, Colin Wilson-Sutter has been a keen angler. In his home area of Oulton Broad, Norfolk, he has won many competitions and accumulated a vast number of trophies over the years.
Wendy loves getting away too, however, she is not an angler. You might think she has the short straw, but Colin and Wendy have found a way to mix angling with exploring the most beautiful parts of the UK, using the motorhome as a base.
There are many caravan sites up and down the country which appeal to different interests; Caravan Sitefinder categorises sites which are family friendly, allow pets, adults only, or, as Colin and Wendy prefer, offer fishing.
Motorhome Chooser visited Colin and Wendy at the Caravan Club Site at Cromwell, Notts to find out a little more about the marriage between motorhoming and angling:
When did you first make the connection between angling and using a motorhome?
“We used to rent cottages for holidays, but it always needed to be near a lake. Once the children had grown up, we had more opportunity to explore Britain at our own pace. We love walking in the Lake District and Derbyshire, so we can enjoy a bit of both walking and fishing, using the motorhome to tour around and stop at more than one place.”
How often do you get away and how long for at a time?
“It varies, but can be up to 3 weeks at a time" Says Colin. "We might stop at 4 sites in the area we go to. I can fish in the morning, have a bite to eat and then we go for a walk in the afternoon. Then when we get back, I can fish in the evening if I feel like it; Wendy knows I’m only 50 yards away.”
How far do you travel?
“All over the UK. We’ve got into discovering our family history, and that can take us almost anywhere. We recently traced a relative’s grave to Brighton and went down to have a look.”
Why does having a motorhome make a difference to the way you enjoy your leisure time?
“It offers total flexibility. You’re not in a hotel – you’ve got your freedom, and you can take part of your home with you when you go away. If we want to put our feet up and have a sleep anytime, we can.
We can spend as little or as much as we like, we don’t have to go out to eat, or eat at a set time. It’s great when you find a little site with a pond in a village environment, even better if there’s a pub next door!”
With thanks to Colin & Wendy Wilson-Sutter and the Caravan Club.
